Internet Access Policy

The Hot Springs County Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. Please note that not all sources on the Internet provide accurate, complete or current information. All Internet resources accessible through the library are provided equally to all library users. Parents or guardians, not the library staff, are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children.

Library staff cannot provide in-depth training concerning Internet computer jargon or personal computer use. We may, however, be able to offer searching suggestions and answer questions. Because of other duties in the library, the staff may not always be available for training or instructional help.

Internet & Computer Use Policies

  • Users must sign-in on the sheet provided at the front desk. Use your name or initials, the computer number available and the time you accessed the computer. The sign-in sheet will be shredded at the end of every day.

  • Sometimes staff will need to block out time on the computer for maintenance.

  • You are allowed 30 minutes and may stay longer if no one has signed in for a computer after your allotted time. You may be limited to one sign-up per day depending on how busy the computers are on any given day. If you are unsure of when a computer may next be open, ring the bell and ask the front desk person. You must close your business on the computer and leave the workstation as soon as you are logged out.
  • You may not use or install your own software programs on the Internet Access Computers. Do not change the configuration of any of the software or settings on the computers.

  • Anyone found to be abusing library computers in any way will forfeit library computer use. This includes erasing any library stored data or programming, or illegally copying copyrighted software from library computers.
  • Use of profanity will result in loss of computer privileges.
  • You are responsibility for any damage occurring to library hardware, software or the computers, due to inappropriate actions or inaction while using the computers. Fees will be assessed and charged to the patron or parent/guardian for a minor patron for repairs or replacement.

  • Children must be 8 years old to use the computers on their own, younger children may use the computers if accompanied by a responsible adult or an older family member. Children may have access to a full range of materials and resources available on the internet. It is up to the parent or guardian to decide what is or is not appropriate.

  • Computers are not to be used to create, transmit, print, or otherwise distribute: pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit materials. Viewing of certain materials in the public library may be considered improper in time, place or manner. Without wishing to censor access, the library staff reserves the right to prohibit material that in their judgement is inappropriate for viewing in this public area. This may include material that you do not find personally offensive. These policies are subject to change. Adequate notice will be given in writing and prominently displayed ten days before any changes go into effect.

  • Printouts are 20 cents a page; you must pay for all your copies, wanted or not. So, be careful that what you print or ask staff to assist you with printing exactly what you need. All unclaimed computer printouts found in the printer or beside the computer will be shredded at the end of the business day.
